Batteries used in stand alone and stand by power
supplies range in size from tiny batteries that will
fit into the palm of your hand through to battery
banks weighing a tonne or more. They all have one
thing in common - the ability to be recharged back
to their original state of charge after being discharged.
Both lead acid batteries and nickel-cadmium [NiCad]
batteries are listed here. Lead acid batteries are
generally cheaper and have a higher charging efficiency
than their NiCad counterparts. NiCad batteries generally
last longer and have the advantage that they can be
completely flattened and stored that way without damage.
They also do not exhibit the sudden death characteristic
of lead acid batteries.
Wet cell lead acid batteries are the cheapest and
the most commonly used in stationary battery banks.
Dry cell batteries are usually used where portability
is required or where they are inserted into a portable
appliance. |

Wet cell lead acid batteries
These are the most commonly used batteries in stand alone
power systems, being the most cost effective available.
They also have a high charging efficiency, with typically
110Ah of charge required to replenish each 100Ah previously
drawn out. It is convenient to divide wet cell batteries
into small format and large format types. Small format batteriess
are generally used for very small systems, typically where
lighting and a sound system are the only loads. These batteries
resemble car or truck batteries in appearance and come either
in a 12 volt package or as a a 6 volt package and are typically
portable. Two 6 volt batteries can be series connected together
to form a 12 volt bank.
Large format batteries are designed for permanent stationary
applications and are the type generally used for meduim
to large RAPS systems. Since these batteries are not required
to be portable they contain generous amounts of plate material
and electrolyte enabling a battery life of 7 to 10 years.

SUNCYCLE AS Series Lead Acid Batteries |

Made in Australia for Australian sunshine. The Battery
Energy Suncycle is carefully designed to satisfy the special
needs of solar and remote area power systems. Users of solar
and remote systems need reliability, low levels of maintenance,
exellent cycling capability especially during low input
periods when demand tends to be highest.
Suncycle batteries, properly maintained, should deliver
a working life well in excess of 10 years. Cycle life is
consistent with design, with at least 5,000 cycles expected
with the typical daily usage in a solar system. Improvements
have continued in recent years, with changes to the active
material to ameliorate charging from the discharged state,
a frequent problem with solar batteries. Battery Energy
has designed Suncycle to deliver reliability and performance,
using ultra thick grids for long life, very high 100 hour
performance and a large electrolyte reservoir for both safety
and ease of maintenance.

Enersun SSR batteries |
|
These are tubular positive plate flooded wet cell batteries
made by Century Yuasa. The amp-hour capacity is quoted at
the C100 rate. Capacity at the C120 rate is 2% to 3% higher
than at the C100 rate. Capacity at the C25 rate is approximately
85% of the capacity at the C100 rate. Will deliver 3000
charge/discharge cycles at 25% depth of discharge and 2050
cycles at 50% depth of discharge. These figures apply where
average ambient temperature is 25 degrees C. Refer to main
battery entry for derating at higher average ambient temperatures.

RAYLITE M-Solar batteries |

These batteries feature tubular positive plate construction
and are designed for solar applications. Under standard
conditions they will deliver 3500 cycles to 20% depth of
discharge and 1500 cycles to 50% depth of discharge. The
batteries are provided with an external plastic case eliminating
the need for separate battery trays.
All models come with a 3-year full and a 2-year pro-rata
warranty.

SunGel are made to satisfy the increasing need for a maintenance
free unit usable in any position, any situation and frequently,
under Australian conditions, in very high temperature environments.
Although the SuperGel battery technology is based on previous
